Dermaplaning Myths Debunked: Separating Fact from Fiction for Glowing Skin

Taking the beauty world by storm, dermaplaning has become the go-to skin treatment for achieving a radiant, silky-smooth glow.
The painless and non-invasive exfoliation treatment uses a sharp blade to remove peach fuzz hair and the top layer of dead skin cells from the face, says Madison Kimmel, a master aesthetician in Staunton, Virginia.
And yet some potential clients may feel apprehensive about the procedure, which is why Kimmel is addressing some of the most common misconceptions about dermaplaning.
Concern: Help! Get that sharp blade away from my face
“Sometimes people see the blade and that’s scary to them,” Kimmel says.” But the procedure is not invasive, and it is superficial. The blade is just skimming the surface of the skin and it’s painless,” Kimmel says. “It might feel a little a little rough, the motion of the blade on the skin, but it is not painful.”
Concern: My hair will grow back thicker or darker
“It’s definitely not going come back darker or thicker because body and facial hair are different,” says Kimmel. “Body hair is terminal hair and it’s thicker and more coarse. Shaving terminal hair can leave the ends blunt or cause a sharp tip. But facial hair is vellus and it is going to regrow just like the peach fuzz you started with. The hair on the face is a lot softer, so while I understand this concern, it is never an issue.”
Concern: I’ll need to keep up with the maintenance
Not necessarily, Kimmel says. Sure, if you like the procedure and want to come back every six to eight weeks, that is fine. But since the hair will grow back just the way it was before, a client can choose whether to return every six to eight weeks or simply have the procedure whenever they choose.
A dermaplaning procedure takes about 30 minutes total, including skin preparation and aftercare.
After your dermaplaning procedure, you will receive instructions on the best skincare practices to follow. The treatment is appropriate for all skin types, Kimmel says, but patients with extremely sensitive skin, intense acne or conditions like eczema or rosacea should consult with a dermatologist before undergoing the procedure.
